Dio was a band founded by the late Ronnie James Dio in 1982, after leaving Black Sabbath.

Reportedly, former Teaser, Ratt, and Rough Cutt guitarist Jake E. Lee was considered for the guitarist position in the band before former Sweet Savage guitarist Vivian Campbell got the job. Jake E. Lee joined Ozzy Osbourne's band soon after.

Ronnie hired his former Rainbow bandmate Jimmy Bain on bass and his former Black Sabbath bandmate Vinny Appice on drums.

At this point, the line up was Ronnie James Dio, Vivian Campbell, Jimmy Bain, and Vinny Appice. This line-up recorded the album Holy Diver.

Former Rough Cutt keyboardist Claude Schnell played on the Holy Diver Tour (but not on the album itself), but reportedly wasn't made an official member of the band until after the tour.

Former Rough Cutt guitarist Craig Goldy replaced Vivian Campbell.

Rowan Robertson replaced Craig Goldy.

Ronnie James Dio disbanded Dio and rejoined Black Sabbath in 1991.

Ronnie James Dio quit Black Sabbath and reformed Dio in 1992.

Dio ended with Ronnie James Dio's death in 2010.
